The Trenton Ellis Wing of MCG

So, I know you don't get a wing in your name just for paying your bills, but if you did, Trenton would have one! We went back to MCG on Sunday...nothing like a Super Bowl trip to the ER.

1:45 pm -We went to the Pediatric Clinic on Sunday because I under reacted to the RSV. So, off we go...Trenton wasn't eating and was very lethargic. We get to the Clinic, not a place I hope to frequent again, and it is PACKED. Fortunately, I sign in before the precious lady who brought all FOUR of her children. We get back in the room and Trenton is in respiratory distress...I mean, I understand that, but it is truly a matter of my child needs to blow his nose. Excuse all of my cynicism...I am kind of over doctors (no offense Dad). So, the doctor gives him a breathing treatment, his O2 is normal, so she sends us to the ER. SURPRISING! My poor baby will not be touched by any doctor because of his TE Fistula history. The Clinic doctor did supposedly refund our money...we didn't wait around to see.

3:30pm - Arrival at the ER. The doctor had called ahead and we didn't have to wait long, but typical weekend, the ER is full of parents and their children (one lady brough all 4) and we go back. Trenton's O2 is 98 and we are fine. No fever, but he is pulling to breathe...back we go. The ER doctor is super nice and so is my favorite nurse, Stephanie. Trenton is amazed at the lights and all 5 of the nurses that are attending to him...he is such a flirt. They give him a breathing treatment, the correct way, and he LOVES it. I wish I had a picture from that...so cute. He is tested for RSV and then he is given an IV for treatment of pnemonia. They have been seeing a lot of pneumonia following RSV, but my baby doesn't have that (we later find out). So, we wait. Wes has to go home and get his digoxin because even in an ER, the pharmacy cannot get it to us...precious since he has to have it at 6:00. We keep waiting for a room, we are being admitted because of what, Trenton's history!

While we wait, MeMe goes and lets poor Baxter out and brings me my school books. Clearly, I will be here all night. She arrives and we are still in the ER.

7:30ish - we get a room! We have the BEST nurse, Karen. She is super attentive. I am still pretty cynical at this point and unfortunately, my southern charm is not overtaking the cynicism. The doctors come in and we talk...Trenton's history is taken again. Part of the benefit of going to MCG is everything is centeralized there..I really want to say, please check his file. We are in for the night. Wes goes and gets us McDonald's for dinner (Yummy). Long story short (too late)....

Monday early morning: Trenton regresses. We are on O2, deep suctioning brought nothing but formula. No formula in belly after the NG tube is down there. UH OH! SO, it goes from respiratory distress to an eating and digestion problem...interesting right. So, now speech therapy is called in. All we have been through and now they are fishing for something to go wrong. More chest x-rays, more poking, more prodding....LEAVE HIM ALONE!

I am grateful for how much they all care and they take great care of him, but I just want to be at home. Monday (after 2 hours of sleep) they do start an IV, but the one previously placed in his arm comes out, so we have to poke again. They can't find a good vein. Poke his hand, it blows. This is also a problem because Trenton LOVES to eat his hands. So, we go to the foot. FINALLY! I am just exhausted, he is exhausted. But, the day continues.

Again, to make a long story short, Trenton does NOT have rsv, reflux, or the croupe. As one doctor and I talked about it, Trenton has a really rough winter, he goes to daycare, and his is little. My child is just going to have to be advanced and learn to blow his nose sooner vs. later.

I do apologize for my cynicism. I just wanted an answer and all they were doing was guessing...much of what medicine is, but I truly do not see a need for SO many doctors to poke and prod in a short period of time.

What we learned: Trenton is a TE Fistula baby...just go to the ER...cut out the middle man. RIDICULOUS! We love MCG and are grateful they are here, but there is something to be said for just waiting it out. The love of my child will not allow me to though. Trenton is at daycare today until 12:15 when Daddy picks him up to go back to MCG for our prescheduled appointment with the NICU clinic. WHEW!

We did take a few pictures, so here are some of them....
This is right after Trenton got his crib toy...it was a jungle that played precious music and frog noises. HE LOVED it. I think he was glad for something to look at other than me. Note the hands in the mouth.

Trenton after I tell him we are going home. He was truly just trying to fit his fist in his mouth, but his outfit was covering it up...still, precious!

Trenton at home, bathed, and in his Tennessee onesie (thanks Ans & Adam!) Much happier!

So, more on the little man tomorrow...I just love him so and he is getting such a personality!
